The ION® Profile helps to identify nutritional deficiencies that may be at the root of chronic conditions. These instructions are for the standard ION® Profile as well as the ION® Profile with 40 Amino Acids.

Key Details

  • You will collect two samples - urine and blood.

    • If you have any of the ION® Profile add-on tests, your results will be analyzed from the same samples used for the regular ION® Profile.

  • You will collect your urine sample prior to your blood draw.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

    • Information about scheduling a blood draw can be found HERE.

    • You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

    • Rupa Health recommends getting your blood drawn and samples shipped Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  • Do not collect while menstruating.

  • You must decrease fluid intake prior to your urine collection.

  • You must fast overnight prior to your blood draw.

  • DO NOT register your test online with Genova.

Preparation & Timing

  • You will collect your urine sample prior to your blood draw.

    • You may collect your urine the morning of your blood draw.

  • Do not collect while menstruating.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

  • Prior to your urine collection,

    • Drink no more than 24 oz of fluids in the 24 hours prior to collection.

    • Drink no more than 8 oz of fluids after 8 pm on the evening prior to collection.

  • Prior to your blood draw,

    • Fast overnight (starting at around 9:00 pm). You may drink water during your fast.

Collection Instructions

Urine Collection

  1. Write the patient's first and last name, date of birth, gender, and the date of collection on the test requisition form and CLEAR CAP plastic vial.

    1. You must use a permanent marker.

  2. Empty your bladder before going to bed.

    1. DO NOT collect this urine.

  3. If you wake to urinate during the night, collect your urine in any clean container.

    1. Genova does not provide a collection container in their kits.

    2. Place this container in the refrigerator.

  4. Collect your first morning urination, immediately upon waking in any clean container.

    1. Try to use the same collection container you used overnight.

    2. If you must use separate containers, mix all urine together in the same collection container.

  5. Open the CLEAR CAP plastic vial.

    1. DO NOT touch or discard the preservative in the vial.

  6. Use the provided pipette to transfer urine from your collection container to the CLEAR CAP plastic vial.

    1. Fill to the 12 mL mark.

    2. DO NOT overfill.

  7. Screw the cap tightly on the vial.

  8. Dispose of any remaining urine.

  9. Place the CLEAR CAP plastic vial and provided ice pack in the freezer.

  10. Bring the frozen urine specimen and ice pack with you to your blood draw.


Blood Collection

  1. You should get your blood drawn in the morning.

    1. Rupa Health recommends getting your blood drawn Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  2. Bring the following items to your blood draw appointment.

    1. Test kit

    2. Completed test requisition form

    3. Frozen urine sample

    4. Frozen ice pack

  3. The phlebotomist will collect, prepare, and ship your samples for you.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE (insurance pay) and HERE (cash pay).

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

    • DO NOT register your test online with Genova.

Shipping

  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return label so you can track your samples back to the lab.

  • The phlebotomist will ship your samples for you using the materials provided in the test kit.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.

  • Your provider may choose to release your results to you. Rupa cannot release your results without provider authorization.
