The Urine Amino Acid Analysis measures the levels of 40 amino acids and intermediary metabolites.

Key Details

  • If you have a kidney disorder, DO NOT take this test.

  • Certain medications may affect test results (see list below).

  • DO NOT collect your samples while menstruating.

  • You must avoid certain foods and medications prior to collecting your sample.

  • Ship your samples within 24 hours of collection.

  • Rupa Health recommends shipping Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays.

Preparation & Timing

  • DO NOT take this test if you have a kidney disorder.

  • If you have abnormal kidney function, your test results may be affected.

  • If you take any of the following medications, consult your healthcare provider prior to taking this test. These medications may affect test results.

    • Diuretics

    • Bactrim

    • Tagamet

    • DO NOT discontinue prescription medications without consulting your healthcare provider.

  • DO NOT collect your samples while menstruating.

  • Avoid the following medications and foods for 4 days before sample collection.

    • Acetaminophen

    • Over-the-counter cold remedies

    • Vitamins

    • Minerals

    • Amino acids

    • Creatine

    • Enhanced sports drinks

    • Vitamin waters

    • Herbal supplements

    • Adrenal steroids

    • Corticosteroids

    • Antihistamines

    • Penicillins

    • D-penicillamine

    • Aminoglycoside antibodies

    • Cephalosporin-C

    • Cephamycins

    • Amphetamines

    • Phenothiazine derivatives

    • DO NOT discontinue prescription medications without consulting your healthcare provider.

  • Avoid the following foods on the day of collection.

    • Food containing aspartame

      • Examples: sugar substitutes like Equal or Nutrasweet

    • Drinks containing aspartame

  • Freeze the provided freezer brick for at least 4 hours prior to shipping your sample.

Collection Instructions

  1. Write the following information on the tube labels.

    1. Your first and last name - Please ensure that the name on the label matches the name on your Rupa order EXACTLY. If it does not match, you may need to recollect your samples.

    2. The time of collection

    3. The date of collection

  2. Affix the labels to the tubes.

  3. Empty your bladder before going to bed at night.

    1. DO NOT collect this urine.

  4. If you wake to urinate during the night (within 6 hours of waking), collect this urine in the provided collection container.

    1. Place the collection cup in the refrigerator.

  5. Collect your first morning urine in the provided collection container.

    1. You will use the same collection container you used at night.

  6. Open the CLEAR-top tube.

    1. DO NOT touch or discard any preservative in the tube.

  7. Pipette urine into the CLEAR-top tube.

    1. Fill until 5 mL mark.

  8. Screw the top on the CLEAR-top tube tightly.

  9. Open the GREEN-top tube.

    1. DO NOT touch or discard any preservative in the tube.

  10. Pipette urine into the GREEN-top tube.

    1. Fill until the 12 mL mark.

  11. Screw the top on the GREEN-top tube tightly.

  12. Shake the GREEN-top tube.

  13. Dispose of the pipette, collection cup, and any remaining urine.

  14. Place the tubes and ice pack in the freezer for at least 4 hours.

    1. The tubes and ice pack should remain in the freezer until you are ready to ship your samples.

    2. NOTE: If you are in Alaska or Hawaii, Genova recommends shipping with dry ice to ensure your samples arrive frozen, as overnight shipping is not guaranteed due to the distance. If your samples do not arrive frozen, you may need to recollect. Please note on your activation card if you use dry ice.

  15. Complete the test registration (instructions HERE).

    1. Please ensure that the name on the registration matches the name on your Rupa order EXACTLY. If it does not match, you may need to recollect your samples.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • Instructions on how to fill out your test registration can be found HERE.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on this form.

Shipping

  • Ship your samples within 24 hours of collection.

  • Rupa Health recommends shipping Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays.

  • NOTE: If you are in Alaska or Hawaii, Genova recommends shipping with dry ice to ensure your samples arrive frozen, as overnight shipping is not guaranteed due to the distance. If your samples do not arrive frozen, you may need to recollect. Please note on your activation card if you use dry ice.

  • To prepare your samples for shipping,

    • Remove the urine samples from the freezer.

    • Place the urine samples (in the biohazard bag) into the Flexfoil pack.

    • Place the frozen ice pack into the Flexfoil pack

    • Seal the Flexfoil pack.

      • Remove the white strip over the adhesive line.

      • Fold the flap over.

    • Place the Flexfoil pack into the test kit box.

    • Place the completed activation card into the test kit box.

    • Place the test kit box into the provided return mailer.

  • Make a note of the tracking number so that you can track your sample back to the lab.

  • Ship your samples via FedEx.

    • You can take your samples to the nearest FedEx location.

    • DO NOT place your samples in a drop box.

    • You can also schedule a FedEx pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339 or visiting their website www.fedex.com.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
