Key Details 

  • Do not take this test if you have a kidney disorder
  • Consult your healthcare provider prior to testing if you take the following medications, have the following conditions, or are pregnant or lactating.
    • Medications: cephalosporins, trimethoprim, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, doxycycline, sulfasalazine, cimetidine, fibrates, human growth hormone (HGH)
    • Conditions: urinary tract infection, bone fracture, spinal cord injury, severe burns
  • For repeat tests, ensure specimens are collected under similar conditions.
  • Avoid high meat intake the night before collection.
  • Sample should be frozen for a minimum of 2 hours before shipping. 
  • Sample should be received by the lab within 2 weeks of collection.
  • Ship samples Monday - Thursday only.

Preparation & Timing

  • If you have a urinary tract infection, bone fracture, spinal cord injury, severe burns, or are pregnant or lactating, it is advisable to delay testing. 
  • If you use cephalosporins, trimethoprim, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, doxycycline, sulfasalazine, cimetidine, fibrates, or human growth hormone (HGH), please consult your healthcare provider prior to taking this test.
  • If this is a repeat test, collect specimens under similar conditions (phase of the menstrual cycle, level of physical activity). 
  • Avoid high meat intake the night before collection.

Collection Instructions

  1. Write your full name, the time, and the date of collection on the tube using a ballpoint pen or pencil ONLY.
  2. Collect your first morning urine (after 6 to 8 hours of sleep) in the collection cup.
    1. If you wake up to urinate during the night within 6 hours of your rising time, collect your urine and refrigerate it
    2. Add the refrigerated sample to the urine you collect when you awaken for the day.
  3. Use the pipette to transfer urine from the collection cup into the tube until it is nearly full.
  4. Recap the tube tightly
  5. Discard the remaining urine, the collection cup, the pipette, and the glove.
  6. Place the filled tube into the biohazard bag.
  7. Freeze the sample for a minimum of 2 hours prior to shipping.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.
  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found here for insurance pay and here for cash pay.
    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

Shipping

  • Sample must be stored frozen for at least 2 hours before shipping.
  • Freeze the enclosed freezer brick a minimum of 8 hours before shipping.
  • Follow the directions in your test kit for proper packing of your sample in the provided FedEx prepaid mailing envelope.
  • Sample should be received by the lab within 2 weeks of collection.
  • Ship samples Monday - Thursday only.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time. 
  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together. 
  • Your provider may choose to release your results to you. Rupa cannot release your results without provider authorization.
