Key Details

  • You will collect two samples - urine and blood.

  • You will collect your urine sample prior to your blood draw.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

    • Information about scheduling a blood draw can be found HERE.

    • You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

    • Rupa Health recommends getting your blood drawn and samples shipped Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  • Do not collect your urine sample while menstruating.

  • You must fast overnight prior to sample collection.

  • Note: Genova does not provide a urine collection container.

Preparation & Timing

  • You will collect your urine sample prior to your blood draw.

    • You may collect your urine the morning of your blood draw.

  • Do not collect your urine sample while menstruating.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

  • Your healthcare provider may have you stop certain medications and supplements for 4 days prior to sample collection. DO NOT stop taking any medications or supplements without first talking to your healthcare provider.

  • Prior to your urine collection,

    • Drink no more than 64 oz of fluids in the 24 hours prior to collection.

    • Fast overnight. You may drink water during your fast.

    • Freeze the provided freezer brick for at least 8 hours.

  • Prior to your blood draw,

    • Fast overnight. You may drink water during your fast.

Collection Instructions

Urine Collection

  1. Write the following information on the provided labels.

    1. Patient's date of birth

    2. Date of collection

  2. Attach a completed label to each of the urine specimen tubes.

  3. Empty your bladder before going to bed.

    1. DO NOT collect this urine.

  4. If you wake to urinate overnight (within 6 hours of your typical waking time), collect your urine in any clean container.

    1. Genova does not provide a collection container in their kits.

    2. A large, clean, plastic cup works well.

  5. Place the container in the refrigerator.

  6. Immediately upon waking, collect your urine in any clean container.

    1. Genova does not provide a collection container in their kits.

    2. A large, clean, plastic cup works well.

    3. Try to use the same collection container you used overnight.

  7. If you collected urine only upon waking or used the same collection container overnight and in the morning, move to step 10.

  8. If you used separate containers to collect your urine, pour all urine together into the same container.

  9. Gently swirl the container to mix the different urine collections together.

  10. Open the GREEN-TOP tube.

    1. DO NOT touch or discard the preservative in the tube.

  11. Use the provided pipette to transfer urine from your collection container to the GREEN-TOP tube.

    1. Add urine until the tube is nearly full.

    2. DO NOT overfill.

  12. Screw the cap tightly on the tube.

  13. Shake the tube.

  14. Open the BLUE-TOP tube.

    1. DO NOT touch or discard the preservative in the tube.

  15. Use the provided pipette to transfer urine from your collection container to the BLUE-TOP tube.

    1. Add urine until the tube is nearly full.

    2. DO NOT overfill.

  16. Screw the cap tightly on the tube.

  17. Shake the tube.

  18. Place the two urine specimen tubes into the biohazard bag.

  19. Place the biohazard bag into the freezer.

  20. Freeze the urine specimen tubes for a minimum of 2 hours.

    1. The freezer brick should be frozen for a minimum of 8 hours.

    2. NOTE: If you are in Alaska or Hawaii, Genova recommends shipping with dry ice to ensure your samples arrive frozen, as overnight shipping is not guaranteed due to the distance. If your samples do not arrive frozen, you may need to recollect. Please note on your activation card if you use dry ice.

  21. Complete your test registration and write the confirmation code on the activation card.

    2. Please ensure that the name on the registration matches the name on your Rupa order EXACTLY. If it does not match, you may need to recollect your samples.

  22. Save one of the bottom labels for your records.

  23. When you are ready to get your blood drawn, place the frozen freezer brick and the biohazard bag into the foam insulator box.

  24. Place the foam insulator box into the cardboard box.

  25. Place the activation card into the cardboard box.

  26. Bring the cardboard box and FedEx shipping materials with you to your blood draw.


Blood Collection

  1. You should get your blood drawn in the morning.

    1. Rupa Health recommends getting your blood drawn Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  2. Bring the following items to your blood draw appointment.

    1. Cardboard box containing the frozen freezer brick and frozen urine samples

    2. Activation card

    3. FedEx shipping materials (provided in your kit)

  3. The phlebotomist will collect, prepare, and ship your samples for you.

  4. NOTE: If you are in Alaska or Hawaii, Genova recommends shipping with dry ice to ensure your samples arrive frozen, as overnight shipping is not guaranteed due to the distance. If your samples do not arrive frozen, you may need to recollect. Please note on your activation card if you use dry ice.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

  • Instructions on how to register your tests with Genova can be found HERE.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on this form.

Shipping

  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return label so you can track your samples back to the lab.

  • The phlebotomist will ship your samples for you using the materials provided in the test kit.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
