The Mold & Mycotoxin Building Profiles use a simple dust swab collection method to test your home, office, or any area you suspect may harbor mold. These tests specifically look for 12 harmful molds and/or 16 mycotoxins they produce. These instructions are for the Mold Building Profile, Mold & Mycotoxin Building Profile, and Mycotoxin Building Profile.

Collection Instructions

  1. Write the following information on the provided label.

    1. Patient name

    2. Patient's date of birth

    3. Provider name

  2. Place the label on the blue top sample tube.

  3. Open the swab package and remove one swab.

    1. Keep the package intact.

  4. You can choose to collect dust from any of the locations listed below.

    1. Air conditioner filter - PREFERRED

      1. Rub the swab over the air filter for a minimum of 30 seconds.

      2. Collect as much dust onto the tip of the swab as possible.

      3. You should collect 1-3 grams of dust (about a bottle cap full) on the swab.

    2. Area of visible mold or water damage - PREFERRED

      1. Slightly moisten the cotton end of the swab.

      2. Rotate the swab over the visible mold for a minimum of 30 seconds.

    3. Heater/air conditioner vent - PREFERRED

      1. Rub the swab over the vents/grates to collect dust.

      2. You should collect 1-3 grams of dust (about a bottle cap full) on the swab.

    4. Windowsill

      1. Slightly moisten the cotton end of the swab.

      2. Swab any visible mold or dark spots by rubbing the swab over the area for a minimum of 30 seconds.

      3. Swab the bottom corners and the area around 2 inches from the corners of the windowsill.

    5. Under/behind furniture

      1. Swipe the swab back and forth in a continuous motion under/behind the furniture.

      2. You should collect 1-3 grams of dust (about a bottle cap full) on the swab.

    6. Refrigerator dust

      1. Swipe the swab back and forth in a continuous motion on the back of the refrigerator or the refrigerator vent.

      2. You should collect 1-3 grams of dust (about a bottle cap full) on the swab.

    7. Vacuum cleaner filter

      1. Rub the swab along the filter for a minimum of 30 seconds.

      2. Collect as much dust onto the tip of the swab as possible.

      3. You should collect 1-3 grams of dust (about a bottle cap full) on the swab.

  5. Open the sample tube.

  6. Place the swab into the sample tube, cotton tip down.

  7. Push the swab shaft into the side of the sample tube to snap it off.

    1. The cotton tip of the swab should fall to the bottom of the sample tube.

  8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the second swab.

  9. Place the cap back on the sample tube.

  10. Press the cap down to secure it tightly.

  11. Place the sample tube into the biohazard bag.

  12. Seal the biohazard bag.

  13. Complete the chain of custody form that came with your kit.

    1. Please ensure the Client Name matches the name on your Rupa order and requisition form EXACTLY.

  14. Complete your requisition form.

  15. Place the forms into the outside pocket of the biohazard bag.

  16. Place the biohazard bag into the plastic kit container.

  17. Place the plastic kit container into the provided shipping envelope.


Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • You must complete your requisition and chain of custody forms and send them back with your samples.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on these forms.


Shipping

  • To prepare your sample for shipping,

    • Place the sample tube into the biohazard bag.

    • Seal the biohazard bag.

    • Place the completed requisition form into the outside pocket on the biohazard bag.

    • Place the completed chain of custody form into the outside pocket on the biohazard bag.

    • Place the biohazard bag into the plastic kit container.

    • Place the plastic kit container into the provided shipping envelope.

    • Seal the shipping envelope securely.

  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return label so you can track your sample back to the lab.

  • Take your sample package to the nearest FedEx location.

  • DO NOT place your sample in a drop box.


Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-10 business days after samples are received at the lab. Rupa Health cannot guarantee processing time.
