Key Details 

  • You will collect two samples: a urine sample and a blood sample.
  • Collect your urine sample prior to your blood draw.
  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist, Monday - Thursday only. 
    • Information about scheduling a blood draw can be found HERE
    • You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.
  • You must avoid certain foods for 48 hours prior to collecting your samples.
  • You must fast for 8 hours prior to your blood draw.

Preparation & Timing

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist.

  • Avoid the following foods for 48 hours prior to collecting your samples.
    • Fruits
    • Jams
    • Jellies 
  • Fast for 8 hours prior to your blood draw.
  • Continue taking any nutritional supplements and medications unless advised differently by your healthcare provider.

Collection Instructions

Urine Collection

  1. Write the following information on the collection cup label using a permanent marker.
    1. Patient name
    2. Patient date of birth
    3. Date of collection
  2. Complete the test requisition form (patient information, date of collection).

  3. Place the completed test requisition form into the outside pocket of the specimen bag.
  4. Prior to bed, empty your bladder. DO NOT collect this urine.
  5. Upon waking, collect your first morning urine into the provided collection cup.
    1. Ensure it has been at least six hours since you last emptied your bladder.
  6. You should collect between 15 mL and 50 mL of urine.
    1. DO NOT collect more than 50 mL of urine.
  7. Place the cap back on the collection cup and close it. 
    1. Turn the cap until you hear 2 clicks. It is not fully closed until you hear the 2 clicks.
  8. Wipe any drops of urine off the outside of the cup.
  9. Place the sample into the provided specimen bag
  10. Seal the bag. 
  11. Place the specimen bag into the freezer. Keep it in the freezer until you go to your blood draw appointment.
    1. The urine sample should stay cool until it is shipped.
  12. Ensure the test requisition form is completed with your personal and sample collection information.

    2. The phlebotomist will fill in the plasma collection information. 

Blood Collection

  1. You must get your blood drawn Monday - Thursday. 
  2. Bring the following items with you to your blood draw appointment.
    1. Test kit
    2. Completed test requisition form
    3. Urine sample 
  3. The phlebotomist will collect, prepare, and ship your sample for you.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.
  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE.
    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

Shipping

  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return mailer so that you can track your samples back to the lab.
  • The phlebotomist will ship your samples for you using the materials provided in the test kit.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 5-10 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time. 
  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together. 
  • Your provider may choose to release your results to you. Rupa cannot release your results without provider authorization.
