Key Details 

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist Monday - Thursday only.
    • Information about scheduling a blood draw can be found HERE
    • You may need to pay an additional fee for phlebotomy.
  • You must fast for at least 8 hours prior to your urine collection and your blood draw.
  • You must collect your urine samples the day before your blood draw.
  • Do not collect urine while menstruating.
  • Certain medications may need to be discontinued prior to your test. See below for details.
  • Limit fluid intake to a total of 48 oz for the 24 hours prior to urine collection.
  • Do NOT register your test online with Genova.

Preparation & Timing

  • If you are a cycling woman, do not collect during menstruation.
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following medications. These medications may impact results.
    • Antibiotics
    • Antifungals
    • Amphetamines
    • Acid blockers
    • Fibrates
    • Corticosteroids

Scheduling

  • You must collect your urine samples the day before your blood draw.
    • Collect urine Sunday - Wednesday. 
    • Bring your completely frozen urine samples to your blood draw appointment. 
  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist Monday - Thursday only.

Timeline

  • 4 days prior to urine collection
    • Avoid the following foods and medications. Do NOT discontinue any medications without approval from your healthcare practitioner.
      • Non-essential medications
      • Supplements
      • Nutrient-fortified foods
      • Nutrient-fortified beverages
      • Artificial sweeteners
      • MSG
  • 24 hours prior to urine collection
    • Limit fluid intake to 48 oz over the entire 24 hour period.
    • Eat your usual diet, but avoid an extreme diet or over-consuming any single food. 
  • The night before urine collection
    • Fast for at least 8 hours prior to your urine collection.
      • You can drink water during the fast.
    • Freeze the included freezer brick for a minimum of 8 hours.
  • The night before the blood draw
    • Fast for at least 8 hours prior to your blood draw.
      • You can drink water during the fast.
    • If you have the genomic SNP add-ons, avoid using mouthwash.

Collection Instructions

Urine

  1. If you wake to urinate during the night, within 6 hours of waking, collect urine into a sterile collection container or a clean, disposable container (not provided).
    1. Refrigerate urine.
    2. Use this same container to collect urine upon waking in the morning.
  2. Immediately upon waking for the day, collect urine in a sterile collection container or a clean, disposable container. 
    1. If you woke during the night, use the same container you did at night. Do not dispose of any of the urine.
    2. Genova does not provide a collection container.
  3. Fill the container and pass any additional urine into the toilet.
  4. Use the pipette to transfer urine from the collection container into the GREEN-top preservative tube until nearly full.
    1. Do NOT touch or discard any preservatives in the tube.
  5. Use the pipette to transfer urine from the collection container into the BLUE-top amber tube until nearly full.
    1. Do NOT touch or discard any preservatives in the tube.
  6. Use the pipette to transfer urine from the collection container into the GREEN-top urine tube until nearly full.
    1. Do NOT touch or discard the preservatives in the tube.
  7. Recap the tubes tightly.
  8. Shake the tubes.
  9. Write your patient information, including your date of birth, on the provided labels.
  10. Place the labels on each tube and the test requisition form.
  11. Place the tubes into the biohazard bag labeled "Bag 1."
  12. Freeze the urine samples for a minimum of 2 hours.
  13. Place the following materials into the insulator box.
    1.  Biohazard bag with frozen urine tubes and the absorbent material
    2. Frozen freezer pack
  14. Place the insulator box in the outer collection box.
  15. Bring this box with you to your blood draw.


Blood

  1. Bring the following items with you to your blood draw appointment. 
    1. Test kit
    2. Frozen urine samples (as prepared above)
    3. Frozen freezer brick
    4. Completed test requisition form
  2. The phlebotomist will collect, prepare, and ship your samples for you.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You may need to pay an additional fee for phlebotomy.
  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE for insurance pay and HERE for cash pay.
    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.
    • Do NOT register your tests online with Genova.

Shipping

  • Freeze your urine samples for a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Bring your test kit and frozen urine samples to your blood draw appointment.
    • Place the biohazard bag containing the frozen urine tubes, frozen freezer brick, and absorbent material into the insulator box.
    • Place the insulator box in the outer collection box.
  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return mailer so that you can track your samples back to the lab.
  • The phlebotomist will ship your samples for you with the materials included in the test kit.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time. 
  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together. 
  • Your provider may choose to release your results to you. Rupa cannot release your results without provider authorization.
