Essential Estrogens™ is a targeted urinary hormone test designed to evaluate estrogen metabolism. This test uses a 24-hour collection.

Key Details

  • Certain medications may affect test results (see list below).

  • You must collect on specific days of your cycle.

  • DO NOT collect your sample if you have a urinary tract infection (UTI).

  • You must avoid flax and sesame seeds for 48 hours prior to collection.

  • You must decrease your fluid intake 24 hours prior to collection.

  • Ship your sample within 48 hours of collection.

  • Rupa Health recommends shipping Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays.

Preparation & Timing

  • If you have a kidney disorder, DO NOT take this test.

  • If you have a urinary tract infection (UTI), DO NOT take this test until you have completed treatment.

  • If you have abnormal kidney function, your test results may be affected.

  • If you take any of the following medications, consult your healthcare provider prior to taking this test. These medications may affect test results.

    • Diuretics

    • Cephalosporins

    • Cimetidine

    • Fibrates

    • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

    • DO NOT change or discontinue using medications without consulting your healthcare provider.

  • You must collect on specific days of your cycle.

    • Premenopausal women: Collect between Day 19 and Day 25 of your cycle.

      • Day 1 is the first day of your period.

    • Menopausal women: Collect on any day.

    • If this is a follow-up test, you must collect your sample on the same day of your cycle, or the same phase of hormone therapy, as you did previously.

  • If you take hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives, continue dosing as usual.

  • Avoid the following foods for 48 hours prior to sample collection.

    • Flax seeds (whole or ground)

    • Sesame seeds (whole or ground)

  • Limit your fluid intake 24 hours prior to sample collection.

    • Drink no more than 0.5 oz fluid/pound of body weight.

    • Example: A 130-lb person should drink no more than 65 oz of fluids.

Collection Instructions

  1. Empty your bladder when you wake up.

    1. DO NOT collect this urine.

  2. Collect each of your urinations for the next 24 hours in the provided collection container.

    1. Collection period: 2nd urination on day 1 - 1st urination on day 2

  3. For each collection,

    1. Collect urine in the provided collection cup.

    2. Pour the urine into the large orange jug.

    3. Set the collection cup aside for your next urination. DO NOT rinse the collection cup.

    4. Recap the jug.

    5. Mix gently.

    6. Place the jug in the refrigerator.

  4. Once the collection period is over, you will measure the urine you collected.

    1. If you only used one jug,

      1. Set the jug on a level surface.

      2. Use the milliliter marks on the jug to read the total volume collected.

      3. Make a note of the total urine volume for the test registration.

      4. Tighten the lid.

      5. Gently mix the urine in the jug for 30 seconds.

    2. If you used two jugs,

      1. Put on the disposable gloves.

      2. Mix the urine by pouring back and forth between the jugs.

      3. Set the jugs on a level surface.

      4. Use the millimeter marks on the jugs to read the total volume collected in each jug.

      5. Make a note of the total amount of urine (jug 1 + jug 2) for the test registration.

  5. Open the white-top cup.

  6. Pour urine from Jug 1 into the white-top cup. You can also pipette the urine.

    1. Fill until the urine reaches anywhere between the 100 mL and 120 mL mark.

  7. Screw the top on the cup tightly.

  8. Dispose of the collection supplies and the remaining urine.

  9. Ensure the following information is complete on the cup label.

    1. Your first and last name - Please ensure that the name on the label matches the name on your Rupa order EXACTLY. If it does not match, you may need to recollect your samples.

    2. Your date of birth

    3. The date of collection

  10. Place the cup into the biohazard bag.

  11. Place the biohazard bag in the refrigerator.

    1. The sample should remain in the refrigerator until you are ready to ship it.

  12. Complete the test registration (instructions HERE).

    1. Please ensure that the name on the registration matches the name on your Rupa order EXACTLY. If it does not match, you may need to recollect your samples.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • Instructions on how to complete your test registration can be found HERE.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on this form.

Shipping

  • Ship your sample within 48 hours of collection.

  • Rupa Health recommends shipping Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays.

  • To prepare your sample for shipping,

    • Remove the urine sample from the refrigerator.

    • Place the completed activation card into the side pocket of the biohazard bag.

    • Place the biohazard bag into the test kit box.

    • Place the test kit box into the provided return mailer.

  • Make a note of the tracking number so that you can track your sample back to the lab.

  • Ship your sample via FedEx.

    • You can take your sample to the nearest FedEx location.

    • DO NOT place your sample in a drop box.

    • You can also schedule a FedEx pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339 or visiting their website www.fedex.com.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
