The Intestinal Permeability test evaluates the ability of lactulose and mannitol to permeate the intestinal epithelial barrier. This analysis helps diagnose "leaky gut" syndrome.

Key Details

  • You must fast for a minimum of 8 hours prior to collection.

  • Avoid any foods containing mannitol during the 6-hour collection period.

  • Avoid non-essential medications and dietary supplements the day prior to and during the collection period.

  • Refrigerate samples until they are shipped.

  • Samples should be shipped as soon as possible, Monday - Friday only.

Preparation & Timing

  • You must fast for a minimum of 8 hours prior to collection.

  • Avoid any foods containing mannitol during the 6-hour collection period. Examples include,

    • Reduced-calorie sweetener

    • Chocolate-flavored coatings in ice cream and candy

    • Powdered chewing gum

  • Avoid non-essential medications and dietary supplements the day prior to and during the collection period.

    • Do not discontinue prescription medications without permission from your healthcare practitioner.

Collection Instructions

Schedule

UPON WAKING

First 2 hours after waking

Hours 2-6 after waking

End of the 6-hour collection period

  1. Urinate, but DO NOT COLLECT it.

  2. Consume the entire lactulose/mannitol drink.

  3. Set a 6-hour timer.

  1. DO NOT eat or drink anything.

  2. Collect all urinations.

  1. You may eat and drink. Avoid foods containing mannitol.

  2. Drink at least one glass of water each hour.

  3. Collect all urinations.

  1. Collect one final urination.

  2. Record the total volume of urine.

  3. Transfer urine to the specimen tube.


Collection Instructions

  1. Urinate upon waking. Do not collect this sample.

  2. Consume the entire lactulose/mannitol drink provided by your healthcare practitioner.

  3. Set a timer for 6 hours.

  4. Open the collapsible container.

    1. Loosen the cap.

    2. Grab the ends of the container and pull it open.

  5. Collect each urination for the next 6 hours.

  6. FOR EACH URINATION,

    1. Collect urine in the provided specimen collection cup.

    2. Pour the urine into the collection container.

    3. Put the collection container in the refrigerator.

  7. Collect a final urine sample at 6 hours.

  8. Place the collection container on a level surface.

  9. Read the volume from the markings on the container.

    1. Write this information on the test requisition form.

  10. Invert the collection container several times to mix the urine.

  11. Use the pipette to fill the yellow/red specimen tube.

  12. Invert the specimen tube several times.

  13. Write the patient's name, date of birth, date and time of collection, and the total 6-hour volume on the test tube.

  14. Place the yellow/red tube into the ziplock bag.

  15. Place the bag into the cardboard box.

  16. Discard any remaining urine and the collection materials.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

Shipping

  • Ship your sample as soon as possible, Monday - Friday only.

    • Refrigerate the sample until you are ready to ship.

  • To prepare your sample for shipping,

    • Place the yellow/red specimen tube into the ziplock bag.

    • Place the ziplock bag into the cardboard box.

    • Place the completed test requisition form into the cardboard box.

    • Place the cardboard box into the provided FedEx Clinical Pak.

    • Fill in the Billable Stamp and place it on the Clinical Pak.

  • Make a note of the tracking number so that you can ship your samples back to the lab.

  • Ship via FedEx.

    • You can schedule a FedEx pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339.

      • At the automatic greeting, say, "Schedule a pick-up."

      • At the next prompt, say, "Schedule a pick-up with a label/stamp."

      • When asked if "stamp" is on the waybill, say, "yes."

      • You will then provide your location information.

    • Do NOT place your sample in a FedEx drop box.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
