The Urine Mercury test measures the excretion of mercury in urine. These instructions are for a 24-hour collection.

Key Details

  • Avoid fish and shellfish for 1 week prior to sample collection.

  • Stop all non-essential medications and dietary supplements for 48 hours prior to and during collection.

  • Collect sample at least 96 hours after any MRI during which gadolinium-based media was administered.

  • Do not collect while menstruating.

  • Ship via FedEx as soon as possible, Monday - Friday only.

  • If you cannot ship the sample the same day you finish collection, refrigerate your sample until you ship it.

Preparation & Timing

  • Avoid fish and shellfish for 1 week prior to sample collection.

  • Stop all non-essential medications and dietary supplements for 48 hours prior to and during collection.

    • Do NOT discontinue prescription medications unless advised by your healthcare practitioner.

  • Collect sample at least 96 hours after any MRI during which gadolinium-based media was administered.

  • Do not collect while menstruating.

Collection Instructions

  1. When you wake up on day 1, urinate and do NOT collect.

  2. Beginning with your second urination of the day, collect urine in any clean collection cup or container.

  3. Pour the urine into the large, orange, 24-hour collection container.

  4. Place the orange collection container into the refrigerator.

  5. Repeat steps 2-4 each time you urinate during the collection period.

    1. Collection period: 2nd urination of day 1 - 1st urination of day 2

  6. After the collection period is over, place the orange collection container on a level surface.

  7. Read the volume from the markings on the container.

    1. You will mark this on the requisition form and on the specimen vial label.

  8. Mix the urine by shaking the container.

  9. Pour the urine into the specimen vial.

    1. Fill the vial to the fill line. Do NOT underfill.

    2. Do NOT touch or discard the acid preservative.

  10. Close the vial tightly.

  11. Gently shake the vial to mix the urine and preservative.

  12. Write your name, date of birth, and the date and time of collection, and the total 24-hour volume on the specimen vial.

  13. Place the vial into the plastic ziplock bag with the absorbent material and seal well.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

Shipping

  • Ship your sample as soon as possible.

    • If you cannot ship your sample the same day as you finish collection, refrigerate the specimen until you ship the test kit back to the lab.

  • Ship samples Monday - Friday only.

  • To prepare your samples for shipping,

    • Place the specimen vial into the ziplock bag.

    • Place the ziplock bag and completed requisition form into the cardboard kit box.

    • Place the cardboard kit box into the FedEx Clinical Pak.

    • Fill out the Billable Stamp.

  • Make a note of the tracking number so that you can track your samples back to the lab.

  • Ship using FedEx.

    • Do NOT place your sample in a FedEx drop box.

    • You can schedule a FedEx pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339.

      • At the automated greeting, say, "schedule a pickup."

      • At the next prompt, say, "schedule a pickup with a label or stamp."

      • You will be asked if the waybill says "stamp" - say, "yes."

      • Then give your address information.

Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
