The Urine Toxic Metals test analyzes elements excreted in urine to determine a patient's possible exposure to toxic elements. These instructions are for a 24-hour collection.
Key Details
Avoid fish and shellfish for 1 week prior to sample collection.
Stop all non-essential medications and dietary supplements for 48 hours prior to and during collection.
Collect sample at least 96 hours after any MRI during which gadolinium-based media was administered.
Do not collect while menstruating.
Ship via FedEx Monday - Friday only.
If you cannot ship the sample the same day you collect, refrigerate your sample until you ship it.
Preparation & Timing
Avoid fish and shellfish for 1 week prior to sample collection.
Stop all non-essential medications and dietary supplements for 48 hours prior to and during collection.
Do not discontinue prescription medications unless advised by your healthcare practitioner.
Collect sample at least 96 hours after any MRI during which gadolinium-based media was administered.
Do not collect while menstruating.
Collection Instructions
Empty your bladder when you first wake up - do not collect this specimen.
You will collect all of your urine beginning with your second urination of the day through your first urination of the following day.
Collect urine in the specimen cup provided.
Pour all urine into the orange specimen container.
Close the container and place it into the refrigerator.
Repeat steps 3-5 for each time you urinate during the collection period.
Collection period: 2nd urination on day 1 - 1st urination (when you wake up) on day 2
When the collection period is over, place the orange collection container on a level surface.
Read the volume from the markings on the container.
In the collection information section of your requisition form, write the date you FINISHED collection, your height, your weight, total volume collected, and mark "24 hours."
Shake the orange container for at least 30 seconds to mix the urine.
Pour urine into the supplied specimen vial.
Fill urine to the top of the label.
Tightly screw the cap onto the vial.
Discard remaining urine.
Write the patient's name, date of birth, and the date of collection on the specimen vial.
Place the vial in the ziplock bag.
Complete the requisition form.
Make sure to mark the box labeled "24 hours."
Fill in the collection information following the instructions in step 9.
Place the ziplock bag and completed requisition form in the cardboard shipping box.
Requisition & Payment
Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.
Shipping
Ship your sample as soon as possible.
If you cannot ship your sample the same day as you collect, refrigerate the specimen until you ship the test kit back to the lab.
Ship samples Monday - Friday only.
Ship using the provided shipping supplies.
Place the specimen vial into the ziplock bag.
Place the ziplock bag and completed requisition form into the shipping box.
Place the shipping box into the FedEx Clinical Pak.
Fill out the Billable Stamp.
Keep the customer receipt so you can have your tracking number.
Ship using FedEx. You can schedule a FedEx pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339.
At the automated greeting, say, "schedule a pickup."
At the next prompt, say, "schedule a pickup with a label or stamp."
You will be asked if the waybill says "stamp" - say, "yes."
Then give your address information.
Do NOT place sample in a FedEx drop box.
Results
Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.
Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
