This test measures excreted iodine to analyze thyroid function and immune system health.
Key Details
This test takes 24 hours to complete.
DO NOT drink more than 3.5 L (15 cups) of liquids during the collection period.
You must avoid certain medications and foods for 5 days prior to and during the collection period.
DO NOT collect while menstruating.
Ship samples as soon as possible, Monday - Friday only.
If you cannot ship your samples the same day you finish collection, place them in the refrigerator until you ship.
Preparation & Timing
DO NOT drink more than 3.5 L (15 cups) of liquids during the collection period.
Avoid the following foods and medications for 5 days prior to and during the collection period.
Seaweed/kelp
Fish
Sea vegetables
Other foods containing iodide/iodine
Iodine supplements (other than the prescribed loading dose)
Non-essential medications
DO NOT discontinue prescription medications without consulting with your healthcare provider.
DO NOT collect while menstruating.
Collection Instructions
Immediately upon waking, collect your urine into the provided collection cup.
Pour the urine into the specimen vial labeled "#1 PRE."
Fill the vial to the top of the label.
Tighten the cap securely.
Discard the remaining urine.
Write the following information on the specimen vial.
Patient's name
Patient's date of birth
Date of collection
Place the vial into the ziplock bag.
Place the bag into a refrigerator.
Fill in the "Random 'PRE' Sample #1 Information" section on the test requisition form.
Take the loading dose as prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor will provide you with instructions on the timing of your loading dose.
Collect all of your urine for the next 24 hours, including your first morning urination the next day.
Collect each urination in the provided specimen collection cup.
Pour the urine into the orange collection container.
Place the orange collection container in the refrigerator in between collections.
*NOTE* If you fill the orange collection container before 24 hours is over, stop collecting your urine and continue to step 11.
Once the 24 hours are over, place the orange collection container on a level surface.
Read the volume from the markings on the container.
Fill in the "24-hour 'POST' Sample #2 Information" on the test requisition form.
Shake the orange collection container for at least 30 seconds.
Pour urine into the vial labeled "POST Sample #2."
Fill the vial to the top of the label.
Tighten the cap securely.
Write the following information on the specimen vial.
Patient's name
Patient's date of birth
Date of collection
Place the vial into the ziplock bag containing sample 1.
Place the bag into the cardboard shipping box.
Place the completed test requisition form into the cardboard shipping box.
If you cannot ship your samples the same day you finish collection, place them in the refrigerator until you ship.
Requisition & Payment
Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.
Shipping
Ship samples Monday through Friday only.
Ship samples as soon as possible.
If you cannot ship your samples the same day you finish collection, place them in the refrigerator until you ship.
To prepare your samples for shipping,
Place the samples into the cardboard kit box.
Place the completed test requisition form into the cardboard kit box.
Place the cardboard kit box into the FedEx Clinical Pak.
Fill in the prepaid Billable stamp and place it on the FedEx Clinical Pak.
Make a note of the tracking number so that you can track your samples back to the lab.
Ship your sample via FedEx.
DO NOT place your samples in a FedEx drop box.
You can schedule a FedEx pick-up by calling 1-800-463-3339.
When you hear the automated greeting, say "Schedule a pick-up."
When you hear the next prompt, say "Schedule a pick-up with a label or stamp."
When asked if "stamp" is written on the waybill, say "yes."
Then provide your address information.
Results
Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.
Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
