The Urine Halides test measures iodine, fluoride, and bromine levels in the urine. The Urine Iodine and Urine Fluoride tests measure the levels of only iodine or fluoride in the urine. These instructions apply to all 3 tests and are for the 24-hour collection.
Key Details
You must avoid certain foods and medications for 48 hours prior to collection.
Do not collect while menstruating.
Ship your sample as soon as possible after collection using FedEx.
Ship your sample Monday - Friday only.
Do NOT place sample in a FedEx drop box.
Preparation & Timing
Avoid the following foods and medications for 48 hours prior to and during the collection.
Seaweed/kelp
Fish
Sea vegetables
Any other foods containing iodine/iodide
Iodine supplements
Non-essential medications
Consult your healthcare practitioner prior to discontinuing any prescription medications.
Do not collect while menstruating.
Do not consume more than 3.5 liters/15 cups of liquid during the collection period.
Collection Instructions
Urinate when you first wake up. Do NOT collect this urine.
Collect all urine for the next 24 hours.
Collection period: 2nd urination of Day 1 - 1st urination of Day 2
Collect urine in the provided specimen collection cup.
Pour the urine into the orange collection container.
Place the orange collection container in the refrigerator.
Repeat steps 4-6 for each urination during the collection period.
Collection period: 2nd urination of Day 1 - 1st urination of Day 2
*NOTE* If you fill the orange collection container before the 24 hours are over, move to step 7.
At the end of the collection period, place the orange collection container on a level surface.
Read the volume from the markings on the container.
Complete the following information on the test requisition form.
Your personal information (name, date of birth, etc.)
Date of collection
Total volume of urine collected
Mark the "24-Hour Collection" box
If you took a loading dose of iodine before collection,
Mark the “POST (after) ingestion of Iodine” box
Write the number of milligrams of iodine you took
Shake the orange container for at least 30 seconds to mix the urine.
Pour urine into the specimen collection vial.
Fill the vial to the top of the label.
Screw the vial cap on tightly.
Write the following information on the specimen vial.
Name
Date of birth
Date of collection
Place the specimen vial in the ziplock bag.
Place the ziplock bag in the cardboard shipping box.
Place the completed requisition form in the cardboard box.
Requisition & Payment
Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.
Shipping
Ship your sample as soon as possible after collection.
Ship your sample Monday - Friday only.
To prepare your sample for shipping,
Place the specimen vial in the ziplock bag.
Place the ziplock bag in the cardboard shipping box.
Place the completed requisition form in the cardboard box.
Seal the cardboard box and place it in the FedEx Clinical Pak.
Fill in the Billable Stamp and attach it to the Clinical Pak.
Keep the Customer Receipt.
Make a note of the tracking number so you can track your sample to the lab.
Ship using FedEx.
Do NOT use a FedEx dropbox.
You can call FedEx to schedule a pickup at 1-800-238-5355.
At the automated greeting, say, "representative."
Say, "yes," you are shipping a package.
Tell the representative that you need a pickup for a package with a Billable Stamp.
Results
Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.
Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
