The Urine Halides test measures iodine, fluoride, and bromine levels in the urine. The Urine Iodine and Urine Fluoride tests measure the levels of only iodine or fluoride in the urine. These instructions apply to all 3 tests and are for the 24-hour collection.


Key Details

  • 🩸 DO NOT collect while menstruating.

  • 🍽️ You must avoid certain foods and medications for 5 days before sample collection.

  • 🚚 Ship your sample as soon as possible after collection, Monday - Friday only.


Preparation & Timing

  • DO NOT collect while menstruating.

  • Avoid the following foods and medications for 5 days before and during the collection.

    • Seaweed/kelp

    • Fish

    • Sea vegetables

    • Any other foods containing iodine/iodide

    • Iodine supplements

    • Non-essential medications

    • DO NOT discontinue any prescription medications before consulting your healthcare practitioner.

  • DO NOT consume more than 3.5 liters/15 cups of liquid during the collection period.


Collection Instructions

  1. Urinate when you first wake up. DO NOT collect this urine.

  2. Collect all urine for the next 24 hours.

    1. Collection period: 2nd urination of Day 1 - 1st urination of Day 2

  3. Collect urine in the provided specimen collection cup.

  4. Pour the urine into the orange collection container.

  5. Place the orange collection container in the refrigerator.

  6. Repeat steps 4-6 for each urination during the collection period.

    1. Collection period: 2nd urination of Day 1 - 1st urination of Day 2

    2. *NOTE* If you fill the orange collection container before the 24 hours are over, move to step 7.

  7. At the end of the collection period, place the orange collection container on a level surface.

  8. Read the volume from the markings on the container.

  9. Complete the following information on the test requisition form.

    1. Your personal information (name, date of birth, etc.)

    2. Date of collection

    3. Total volume of urine collected

    4. Mark the "24-Hour Collection" box

    5. If you took a loading dose of iodine before collection,

      1. Mark the “POST (after) ingestion of Iodine” box

      2. Write the number of milligrams of iodine you took

  10. Shake the orange container for at least 30 seconds to mix the urine.

  11. Pour urine into the specimen collection vial.

    1. Fill the vial to the top of the label.

  12. Screw the vial cap on tightly.

  13. Write the following information on the specimen vial.

    1. Name

    2. Date of birth

    3. Date of collection

  14. Place the specimen vial in the ziplock bag.

  15. Place the ziplock bag in the cardboard shipping box.

  16. Place the completed requisition form in the cardboard box.


Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You DO NOT need to pay anything extra.

  • You must complete your requisition form and send it back with your sample.

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in any payment information on this form.


Shipping

  • Ship your sample as soon as possible after collection, Monday through Friday only.

    • If you cannot ship your sample the same day you finish collection, place it in the refrigerator until you ship.

  • To prepare your sample for shipping,

    • Place the sample into the cardboard kit box.

    • Place the completed test requisition form into the cardboard kit box.

    • Place the cardboard kit box into the FedEx Clinical Pak.

    • Seal the FedEx Clinical Pak.

    • Fill in the prepaid Billable stamp and place it on the Clinical Pak.

  • Make a note of the tracking number so that you can track your sample back to the lab.

  • Ship your sample via FedEx.

    • DO NOT place your sample in a FedEx drop box.


Results

  • Results should be released to your provider 3-8 business days after samples are received at the lab. Rupa Health cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your provider will notify you when your results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.
