The ION® Profile helps to identify nutritional deficiencies that may be at the root of chronic conditions. These instructions are for the standard Pediatric ION® Profile as well as the Pediatric ION® Profile with 40 Amino Acids.

Key Details

  • This test requires two samples - urine and blood.

  • The urine sample must be collected prior to the blood draw.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

    • Information about scheduling a blood draw can be found HERE.

    • You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

    • Rupa Health recommends getting blood drawn and samples shipped Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  • The child must decrease their fluid intake prior to urine collection.

  • The child must fast for 12 hours prior to the blood draw.

  • DO NOT register the test online with Genova.

Preparation & Timing

  • The urine sample must be collected prior to the blood draw.

    • You may collect urine the morning of the blood draw.

  • Blood sample collection must be performed by a phlebotomist IN THE MORNING.

    • Rupa Health recommends getting blood drawn and samples shipped Monday - Thursday only to avoid shipment delays

  • Prior to urine collection,

    • Decrease fluid intake to avoid excessive dilution of the urine.

  • Prior to the blood draw,

    • Fast for 12 hours. The child may drink water during the fast.

Collection Instructions

Urine Collection

  1. Write the patient's first and last name, date of birth, gender, and the date of collection on the test requisition form and CLEAR CAP plastic vial.

    1. You must use a permanent marker.

  2. Have the child empty their bladder before going to bed.

    1. DO NOT collect this urine.

  3. If the child wakes to urinate during the night, collect the urine in any clean container.

    1. Genova does not provide a collection container in their kits.

    2. Keep any collection containers in the refrigerator until the morning.

    3. You must collect all urine samples from the child's bedtime to their morning awakening.

  4. For infant urine collection, use the provided pediatric urine collection bags**.

    1. Empty any used collection bags into a clean container and keep them in the refrigerator until the morning.

  5. Collect the child's first morning urination, immediately upon waking in any clean container.

  6. Mix all urine collections together in a single, clean container.

  7. Use the provided pipette to transfer urine from the collection container to the CLEAR CAP plastic vial.

    1. Fill to the 12 mL mark.

    2. DO NOT overfill.

  8. Screw the cap tightly on the vial.

  9. Dispose of any remaining urine.

  10. Place the CLEAR CAP plastic vial and provided ice pack in the freezer.

  11. Bring the frozen urine specimen and ice pack with you to the blood draw.


**PEDIATRIC URINE COLLECTION BAGS

To prepare your child for the urine bag application,

  1. Lay the child on its back and spread its legs.

  2. Wash the diaper area with mild soap and rinse with lukewarm water.

  3. Move the washcloth down over the genitals and rectal area.

    1. Move from the genitals to the rectal area, NOT from the rectal area to the genitals.

  4. Pat dry.

    1. DO NOT apply baby oil, lotion, or powder.

  5. When the skin is dry, you can apply the collector.

  6. Male child:

    1. Fit the collector over the penis and testicles.

      1. If the genitals do not easily fit through the opening, DO NOT use the collector.

    2. Remove the protective paper from the bottom half of the adhesive patch.

    3. Press the adhesive firmly against the skin.

      1. Avoid wrinkling the skin.

    4. Once the bottom portion is in place, remove the paper from the upper half of the adhesive.

    5. Work upward to finish sticking the adhesive to the skin.

      1. Avoid wrinkling the skin.

  7. Female child:

    1. Remove the protective paper from the bottom half of the adhesive patch.

    2. Place the adhesive in the area between the rectum and the genitals.

    3. Press the adhesive firmly against the skin.

    4. Once the bottom portion is in place, remove the paper from the upper half of the adhesive.

    5. Work upward to finish sticking the adhesive to the skin.

      1. Avoid wrinkling the skin.

  8. As soon as you see urine in the collector, carefully peel the adhesive away from the skin.

  9. Reapply a new urine bag.

  10. Empty the contents of the urine bag into a clean collection container and keep it in the refrigerator.

    1. You must collect all urine samples from the child's bedtime to their morning awakening.


Blood Collection

  1. The child should get their blood drawn in the morning.

    1. Rupa Health recommends getting blood drawn Monday - Thursday only.

  2. Bring the following items to the blood draw appointment.

    1. Test kit

    2. Completed test requisition form

    3. Frozen urine sample

    4. Frozen ice pack

  3. The phlebotomist will collect, prepare, and ship your samples for you.

Requisition & Payment

  • Your kit has been prepaid. You may need to pay a separate fee for phlebotomy.

  • Instructions on how to fill out your requisition can be found HERE (insurance pay) and HERE (cash pay).

    • Since you pre-paid for your tests, you do not need to fill in the payment information on any of these forms.

    • DO NOT register the test online with Genova.

Shipping

  • Make a note of the tracking number on the return label so that you can track the samples back to the lab.

  • The phlebotomist will ship the samples for you using the materials provided in the test kit.

Results

  • Results should be released to your child's provider 7-21 business days after samples are received at the lab. We cannot guarantee processing time.

  • Your child's provider will notify you when the results are in and schedule a follow-up appointment for you to review them together.

  • Your child's provider may choose to release the results to you. Rupa cannot release results without provider authorization.
